Packaging with Purpose

Across our markets we’ve been making bold strides to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability. Let’s show you some of the small things we’ve done that are adding up to make a difference.

Australia

The Tetley team have made a big change to the packaging for our Tetley Original teabags. The new carton pack has no plastic outer covering. Cleverly designed to keep the tea bags safely in the box, the carton has a sealed inner perforated lid for easy peel-off, plus an outer snap lid for resealing.

This simple move is diverting around 15 tonnes, or 5.7 million pieces of plastic from landfills each year.

We have also made changes to our Tetley decaf string and tag teabag by removing the staple from the tag so that it can be easily recycled.

Packaging with Purpose

Poland

As one of the best-known fruit and herbal brands in Poland, Vitax teas offer a burst of flavour and at the same time, have a keen eye for reducing single use plastics.

All the teas are packed individually in recyclable paper envelopes, the tea bags are string and tag with a knot replacing commonly used staple fixing, and the outer pack is made of 100% recyclable cardboard with no plastic outer wrap.

The team has applied the same improvements to its newest selection of teas - the Vitax Pleasure Collection, a box of guilty pleasures with a lighter footprint.

Packaging with Purpose

Canada

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, Tetley Canada has released two new packaging upgrades. The iconic blue box of Orange Pekoe Tea has been redesigned, eliminating the plastic overwrap and leaving a fully recyclable carton. This change will remove 8.3 million pieces of plastic from Tetley Canada’s waste stream. The packaging redesign is complemented by a transition to plant-based teabags.

Packaging with Purpose

UK

In the UK, we offer larger packs for people who drink a lot of tea or serve it to others. These packs previously faced recyclability challenges due to the hard‑to‑recycle zip. We’ve now removed the inner zip, simplified the design, and made the packs recyclable at front‑of‑store supermarket collection points. This redesign has helped eliminate 7.5 tonnes of non‑recyclable material from going to landfill every year.
